Opened Up, Opened Out

Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
John 7:37 (NIV)

At Holy Trinity we are beginning a new phase of our life together. We understand Jesus' invitation to the thirsty to drink as a call to be opened up to the living God. Together we are exploring what it means for us to be opened up to God and opened out to others. View of Holy Trinity Jesmond Church We believe this is something for all of us - from youngest to oldest.

We are opened up to God when we hear and respond to his Word in Scripture, when we engage in praise and thanksgiving around his table, and when we are drawn into divine conversation through prayer. The Bible, worship and prayer are key to our understanding of who God is, the nature of his grace and forgiveness, his hope and promise, and his death-defeating love.

We also passionately believe being opened up to God is not just something for Sundays, but is what God desires for the whole of our lives.

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.
John 7:38 (NIV)

We long for our Christian faith to engage all areas of our life as we witness to the goodness of God in our relationships with friends and family, our work and leisure, our responsibility for the environment, and our concern for justice and peace in the world. We understand Jesus' promise of streams of living water flowing from within as a picture of lives opened out to others in life-giving love and service.

So for us small groups are important for seeking a deeper knowledge of God together, building meaningful friendships and keeping each other accountable in our living out and sharing of faith. As a church we actively support and partner various mission organisations working locally and throughout the world. And we also have a firm commitment to fair trade and to working for justice for all people through involvement in projects like 'Make Poverty History' and 'Micah Challenge UK'.

The most exciting part is that we are still learning what being 'opened up and out' might mean for us and what it might look like. But we believe it is all part of the changing challenge of following Jesus in the 21st Century.
